A Slice of Math and Fun for the Whole Family

On March 14, students, teachers, and dessert lovers came together to celebrate Pi Day — a quirky, clever holiday that honors the mathematical constant π (approximately 3.14), and happens to fall perfectly on the calendar date 3/14. Across the country, schools hosted math games, pi recitation challenges, and, of course, plenty of pie-themed parties.

Pi (π) is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter, and it's a number that goes on forever without repeating. Math teachers use Pi Day to help students explore geometry in a fun and hands-on way, often with real-world examples — like slicing a pizza or measuring a round cake pan. At home, families took the celebration to their kitchens, where pie-making became both a tasty activity and a math lesson.

Parents were encouraged to use baking as an opportunity to teach fractions, measurements, and conversions. From halving ingredients to dividing slices, math becomes more meaningful (and delicious) when it's baked into the experience.

Easy No-Bake Chocolate Pie Recipe (Kid-Friendly!):

  • Ingredients:

    • 1 pre-made graham cracker crust

    • 1 (3.9 oz) box of instant chocolate pudding mix

    • 2 cups cold milk

    • 1 container whipped topping (Cool Whip)

    • Optional: chocolate shavings, sprinkles, or fruit for decoration

  • Instructions:

    1. In a bowl, whisk together pudding mix and milk for 2 minutes.

    2. Let it sit for 5 minutes to thicken.

    3. Pour pudding into the crust and spread evenly.

    4. Top with whipped topping and decorate as desired.

    5. Chill for at least 1 hour before serving.

Whether you’re memorizing pi to the 20th digit or just cutting your pie into equal eighths, this holiday makes math a lot more fun — and a little bit sweeter.
