Springfield residents and visitors will have several ways to mark Independence Day this year, with activities planned July 4 and July 5 across the city and at nearby historic sites.
This year’s holiday comes as the United States marks 250 years since the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The document declared the 13 American colonies’ separation from Great Britain and became the country’s founding statement.
The anniversary has added attention to Independence Day celebrations across the country, as national, state and local organizations recognize America’s semiquincentennial through historical programs, public gatherings, educational exhibits and community events.
In Springfield, the holiday schedule includes historical programs, live music, family activities, baseball, fireworks and community gatherings.
The Hoogland Center for the Arts will continue performances of the musical 1776 through July 5. The production focuses on the debate and events surrounding the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site will continue its Independence Day Celebration on July 4. Visitors can take part in period demonstrations and attend a public reading of the Declaration of Independence.
The Springfield Lucky Horseshoes will host an Independence Day game at Robin Roberts Stadium. The team will commemorate America’s 250th birthday with a daytime game featuring $2.50 admission and patriotic-themed jerseys.
Freedom Run 2026 will take place the morning of July 4 at Centennial Park, offering residents a chance to begin the holiday with a community fitness event.

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum will offer free admission on July 4 in recognition of Independence Day. Visitors can also view current exhibits, including 250 Years of American Stories and The Second American Revolution.
Union Square Park, located across from the presidential library and museum, will host America’s Block Party. Organizers describe the event as part of the largest synchronized Fourth of July celebration in American history. The event will include food trucks, live entertainment and family activities.
Downtown activities will continue later that evening at the Y-Block with an America 250 concert and fireworks celebration. The Springfield Municipal Band will perform before fireworks are launched over the downtown skyline.
Knights Action Park will also hold its Fourth of July Extravaganza. Guests can spend the day at Splash Kingdom water park before remaining for evening entertainment, food and fireworks.
The holiday weekend will continue July 5 with the Route 66 Cruise-In at the Brinkerhoff Mansion. The event will feature American muscle cars, live music and food and beverage vendors.
Independence Day is one of the country’s most widely recognized holidays, commonly marked with fireworks, parades, cookouts and public events. This year, those traditions are also part of a larger national milestone as the country marks 250 years since the Declaration of Independence.
Illinois communities are also taking part in the anniversary through local programs, historic site activities, museum exhibits and public celebrations tied to America’s 250th year. In Springfield, the July 4 and July 5 schedule connects the holiday weekend with that broader commemoration, offering residents and visitors several ways to celebrate, learn and gather with others.
