State Rep. Mike Coffey said legislation aimed at reducing vehicle registration costs for Illinois veterans is moving forward after receiving unanimous bipartisan support in committee.
Coffey, a Republican from Springfield, filed House Bill 4232, which would cap most vehicle registration fees at $100 for veterans across the state. The proposal is intended to provide modest financial relief while recognizing the continued contributions veterans make in their communities.
“Veterans continue to play an important role in our communities long after their service, and they deserve financial relief,” Coffey said. “That’s why I filed legislation to give the men and women who served our country a discounted vehicle registration fee. I’m proud to sponsor HB 4232 and grateful for the unanimous, bipartisan support it received in committee.”
If approved, the legislation would apply to standard vehicle registration fees for eligible veterans who have a driver’s license with a veteran designation. Coffey said the measure would allow veterans to keep more of their income while offering recognition for their service.
Coffey said he is looking forward to the bill being called for a vote on the House floor so it can advance to the Senate.
In addition to the legislation, Coffey is encouraging veterans to remain engaged in state policy discussions and share feedback through his Veterans’ Advisory Council, which is intended to provide input on issues affecting the veteran community.
“On behalf of the people of the 95th District and the State of Illinois, thank you for your service to our country,” Coffey said. “Our community is grateful for your sacrifice in defense of our freedoms.”
Veterans interested in joining the advisory council or sharing feedback can complete a form through Coffey’s office. Additional information is available on his website.
