The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office and the Sangamon County Jury Commission are warning residents about a recent phone scam involving individuals impersonating law enforcement officers and court personnel in an attempt to obtain money.
The scheme involves callers falsely claiming to be affiliated with the Sheriff’s Office or another law enforcement agency. These individuals often pressure victims into paying alleged fees or fines through gift cards, cash transfers, or bank account withdrawals.
Officials emphasize that no legitimate law enforcement agency will ever request or demand money over the phone under any circumstances.
“Residents should be cautious when answering unsolicited calls, especially from individuals asking for personal or financial information,” said Sheriff Paula Crouch. “If you ever receive a suspicious call, hang up immediately and verify the identity of the caller by contacting our office directly.”
The Sheriff’s Office encourages the public to remain vigilant and never provide sensitive information to unknown callers. If anyone believes they are being targeted by a scammer, they should report the incident to the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office or their local law enforcement agency.
