Crime Stoppers is requesting the public’s assistance in an ongoing arson investigation. The incident occurred on May 26 around 3:00 a.m. at 106 W. Jefferson Street, the location of the Butternut Hut.
Surveillance footage shows an unidentified individual breaking a window on the door with an unknown object. Moments later, the suspect is seen throwing a second object—already on fire—through the broken window. The object ignited upon landing, causing the fire to spread inside the building.
At the time of the incident, there were residents living in apartments above the business. The suspect was wearing dark-colored clothing.
The Springfield Fire Department is asking for help in identifying the person responsible. Still images of the suspect are available at cashfortips.us.
Anyone with information about the case is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers anonymously by calling 217-788-8427, submitting a tip at cashfortips.us, or using the P3 app. Tips that lead to an arrest could be eligible for a cash reward of up to $2,500.
