Crime Stoppers: Scam Awareness

This week, Crime Stoppers is urging residents in Sangamon County to be vigilant against various types of scams that have been on the rise. The organization has received an increasing number of reports on a range of scams including Amazon scams, romance scams, and most recently, scams involving the downloading of an app called Anydesk. The public is being warned never to allow anyone to remotely access their computer unless they are sure that the request is coming from legitimate technical support.

According to the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office and Springfield Police Department, since the beginning of this year, there have been multiple reports of financial scams totaling over $900,000 in losses. The police have urged the public to be aware of such scams and to report any suspicious activities.

Crime Stoppers has advised residents who have information regarding scams or any other crime to call them anonymously at 217-788-8427 or submit tips on their website, cashfortips.us.
