Deputies Respond to Distraught Driver, Riverton Schools Locked Down

Tuesday morning, the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office received a request for assistance from the Riverton PD in relation to a male individual in Spaulding who was in distress and displaying signs of self-harm.


Upon arrival at the location, the officers found that the man was no longer there. As a precaution, the Riverton schools were put on lockdown, and the Sangamon County Central Dispatch began an attempt to locate the man's vehicle.


After several hours of searching, deputies eventually located the vehicle on the west side of Springfield and attempted to stop it. The driver refused to pull over,Fortunately, the deputies were able to follow the vehicle safely from a distance.


The driver stopped the vehicle in the 3500 block of Ogden Road in Springfield, which is a dead-end road. After negotiations between the driver and the police officers from the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office, Springfield Police Department, and Riverton Police, the man surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident.


The 39-year-old man was then taken to Memorial Medical Center for further evaluation.
