Downtown Springfield, Inc. (DSI) has begun the search for a new executive director following a mutual separation with Carlos Ortega, marking a leadership transition for the nationally accredited Main Street organization. The decision was announced by the DSI Board of Directors, which has appointed Jay Shanle to serve as interim executive director while a formal search is conducted.

Board President David Lee said the organization is focused on identifying a leader who can continue advancing DSI’s mission and strengthening relationships throughout the community. He thanked Ortega for his leadership over the past two years and noted that the board is seeking a candidate who can build on recent progress while further enriching the downtown experience for residents, businesses and visitors.

To guide the hiring process, the board has retained Always On Consulting to lead the executive search.

Shanle steps into the interim role with an extensive background in downtown initiatives and community engagement. He currently serves as DSI’s director of communications and also works as program director for the Springfield Area Arts Council. During his time with DSI, he played a role in the organization’s transition from a 501(c)(6) to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and contributed to the grassroots “My Heart’s Downtown” campaign. He also serves as co-chair of the Downtown Alliance, a collaborative group working to implement the Downtown Springfield and Mid-Illinois Medical District Master Plan.

In addition to his current responsibilities, Shanle previously spent six years on the DSI Board of Directors and served on the INB Fire Fund Committee. He has been involved in several of the organization’s signature events and programs, including the annual awards dinner, the Friend of the Market Street Dinner and Momentum on Main Street. Prior to his work with DSI, Shanle spent seven years with Conn’s Hospitality Group as a corporate administrator.

Ortega’s tenure included securing key grant funding, expanding SNAP benefit programs within the Old Capitol Farmers Market and leading strategic planning efforts that culminated in DSI’s transition to a 501(c)(3) organization. He served as executive director for two years.

Downtown Springfield, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting a vibrant and collaborative downtown district. As a nationally accredited Main Street organization, DSI works to enhance economic development, creativity and leadership in the city’s core, with the goal of strengthening Springfield and Sangamon County as a whole.
