While Springfield’s own Illinois State Fair may grab most of the headlines each August, many residents are surprised to learn the state hosts a second official fair each year — and it’s only a few hours down the road.
The Du Quoin State Fair, held in Perry County in Southern Illinois, is already underway and runs through September 1. The 11-day event offers a mix of agriculture, entertainment, and small-town charm, drawing visitors from across the region.
First held in 1923, the Du Quoin fair has long been a showcase for Southern Illinois farmers and producers. Livestock competitions, horse shows, and agricultural exhibits remain a cornerstone of the event. Over the decades, it has expanded to include big-name concerts, carnival rides, motor sports, and a popular twilight parade to open the festivities.
Unlike Springfield’s fair, admission to the Du Quoin State Fair is free. Parking is available for $10 to $15 per day, or visitors can purchase a $30 seasonal parking pass that covers the entire run of the event. The fairgrounds open daily at 8 a.m., with activities continuing into the evening.
This year’s entertainment lineup includes a range of music acts, from country headliners to classic rock groups, along with tractor pulls, auto racing, and demolition derbies. Vendors are offering the traditional fair favorites — corn dogs, lemon shake-ups, and barbecue — alongside regional specialties.
For Springfield residents who missed out on the local fair or simply want to extend the season, the Du Quoin State Fair provides another opportunity to enjoy the rides, food, and community atmosphere that make summer in Illinois unique.
More information, including a full schedule of events, is available on the fair’s official website at dsf.illinois.gov.
