Illinois residents have one week left to vote on the potential state flag redesign. Voting closes on February 14. The Illinois Flag Commission selected ten finalists from nearly 5,000 submissions. Residents can vote on the Illinois Secretary of State’s website, choosing a new design, a historical flag, or keeping the current flag. Votes can be cast once every 24 hours.
The redesign has sparked debate. Supporters see an opportunity for a fresh state symbol, while critics argue it is an unnecessary expense given budget challenges, struggling schools, and economic concerns. Many believe the state should focus on more urgent issues.
After voting ends, the Illinois Flag Commission will submit results and recommendations to the Illinois General Assembly by April 1, 2025. Lawmakers will decide whether to adopt a new flag, revert to a previous design, or keep the current flag.
Illinois adopted its state flag in 1915, nearly a century after joining the Union. The design came from a contest sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution, with Lucy Derwent’s submission featuring the Great Seal of Illinois on a white background. In 1969, “Illinois” was added to improve recognition.
