High school students from across Central Illinois recently gathered in Springfield to take part in a hands-on lesson in government through State Senator Steve McClure’s (R-Springfield) Youth Advisory Council.

The program, held at the University of Illinois Springfield, welcomed 78 students from schools across the 54th Senate District to learn about the legislative process and the importance of civic participation. Attendees heard directly from public officials, including the Mayor of Springfield, the Illinois Auditor General, and a Senate Caucus spokesperson, who offered insights into their roles and experiences in state and local government.

“This is an opportunity to encourage students to become the next generation of leaders,” said Senator McClure. “It’s amazing to see these students explore their interest in politics and government.”

Following the morning’s discussions, students participated in a mock legislative exercise designed to mirror the committee process in the Illinois General Assembly. Working in groups, they developed and debated bills on topics such as expanding mental health services in schools, improving food quality, and increasing access to academic assessments. Participants took on a variety of roles, from legislators and lobbyists to members of the public, learning how collaboration, negotiation, and compromise are essential to effective lawmaking.

Senator McClure said programs like this are meant to inspire civic responsibility and leadership among young people while helping them understand how public policy affects their communities. “The students’ enthusiasm and creativity show that our future is in good hands,” McClure said. “When young people take an interest in government, they strengthen the foundation of our democracy.”

The Youth Advisory Council is open to all high schools within the 54th Senate District. Students interested in participating next year are encouraged to contact their school principal or superintendent for more information.
