In a bid to honor the rich legacy of women’s baseball and softball in Sangamon County, the Sangamon County Historical Society and the Sangamon Valley Collection are inviting community members to share artifacts that celebrate these sports and the athletes who played them.

Officials are requesting donations or loans of items such as uniforms, gloves, photographs and documents that reflect the history of women’s teams that played locally, as well as pieces connected to players from Sangamon County who competed elsewhere.

The contributed materials will be curated into a special exhibit scheduled to open to the public at the Sangamon County Complex in May. Organizers hope the display will shed light on the important role women have played in the region’s sporting heritage and offer visitors a deeper appreciation for the athletic achievements that have often been overlooked.

Community members who possess relevant memorabilia are encouraged to contact the Sangamon Valley Collection by Feb. 10, 2026, to arrange for their items to be included. Those interested in contributing or seeking further information can reach the Society at 217-753-4900 or via email at svc@lincolnlibrary.info.

By preserving and showcasing these historical artifacts, the Historical Society aims to ensure that the stories of local women athletes remain an enduring part of Sangamon County’s cultural narrative.
