Illinois Invests in Local Food Production

A state-funded grant program is providing assistance to Illinois farmers and food producers as part of an effort to expand the state’s local food supply and strengthen connections between producers and consumers.

The “Illinois Farmers Can Feed Illinois” initiative, administered through the Illinois Department of Agriculture, is designed to help farmers and food businesses invest in infrastructure that allows them to grow, process and distribute food within the state. The program focuses on supporting small and mid-sized operations that may not otherwise have the resources to scale up production or reach new markets.

Through the program, eligible applicants can receive funding to purchase equipment, improve storage capacity and enhance distribution systems. Those investments are intended to make it easier for producers to move their products from farms to local grocery stores, schools, food banks and other community-based outlets.

State officials have emphasized that a significant portion of the food consumed in Illinois is produced outside of the state, despite Illinois being a major agricultural producer. By increasing in-state processing and distribution capabilities, the program aims to keep more of the food supply local while also supporting the state’s agricultural economy.

In addition to economic benefits for farmers, the program is also intended to improve access to fresh and locally grown food in communities across Illinois. Participating producers are encouraged to partner with food banks and other organizations to help address food insecurity and expand access to nutritious options.
