Labor Day Honors American Workers

Labor Day will be observed Monday, Sept. 7, giving many Springfield and Sangamon County residents a three-day weekend and an opportunity to recognize the workers who help support the community and the nation.

Although the holiday is often associated with cookouts, travel and the unofficial end of summer, Labor Day is intended to celebrate the social and economic achievements of American workers.

The first Labor Day celebration was held Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City and included a parade organized by the Central Labor Union. The observance gradually spread to other states before President Grover Cleveland signed legislation in 1894 making the first Monday in September a national holiday.

Labor Day recognizes the contributions of workers across all professions, including construction workers, teachers, health care professionals, farmers, factory workers, first responders, government employees, retail workers and others who keep communities operating each day.

The holiday also serves as a reminder of the role workers have played in building the country’s economy, infrastructure and public institutions. It recognizes generations of employees whose labor has helped improve workplaces, strengthen communities and support families.

For many people, Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer and a final long weekend before schools, workplaces and community activities settle into their fall schedules. Families often observe the holiday by gathering for meals, spending time outdoors or simply taking a break from their regular routines.

Many employees, however, remain on the job during the holiday. Police officers, firefighters, emergency dispatchers, health care employees, utility workers, retail employees and others continue providing essential services while many people have the day off.

However residents choose to spend Labor Day, the meaning behind the holiday remains the same: recognizing the work performed each day by the people who build, serve and support their communities.
