Lincoln Land Community College (LLCC) announced the winners of this year's Dick Dhabalt Athlete of the Year Award. The prestigious accolade recognizes exceptional student-athletes who have demonstrated outstanding performance both on the field and in the classroom. The 2023 recipients are Madalyn Buxton, a talented center midfielder from the soccer team, and Porter Conn, an impressive left-handed pitcher from the baseball team.
Madalyn Buxton, a sophomore at LLCC, proved her prowess as a center midfielder throughout the season. She led the team with an impressive 9 points, consisting of 3 goals and 3 assists. Buxton's exceptional performance earned her the title of MWAC All-Conference. Not only did she excel on the field, but she also maintained a remarkable 4.0 GPA during the spring semester. Buxton's dedication to both athletics and academics has earned her a spot at Illinois Wesleyan University, where she will continue her soccer career.
"Madalyn led our team both on the field and in the classroom," praised David Myers, head women's soccer coach at LLCC. "She embodies the true spirit of a Logger and is a shining example of what it means to be an athlete."
On the baseball side, LLCC's freshman left-handed pitcher, Porter Conn, left a lasting impression with his remarkable skills. With a notable 2.12 ERA, Conn showcased his talent by achieving a 4-1 record, accompanied by 3 saves and an impressive 73 strikeouts in 46 and two-thirds innings pitched. Conn's extraordinary achievements led him to be honored as a member of the First Team All-Region and First Team All-Conference. Moreover, he received All-Academic Honors, including All-Conference and All-American recognition.
"Porter had an outstanding freshman year, and we have high expectations for him in the future," expressed Ron Riggle, LLCC's athletic director and head baseball coach. "He serves as a true role model for student-athletes, and I couldn't be prouder of his achievements both on and off the field."
The Dick Dhabalt Athlete of the Year Award, established in 2015, pays tribute to Mr. Dhabalt's remarkable contributions as a former athletic director, head men's basketball coach, and esteemed faculty member at LLCC. The annual award aims to honor his unwavering commitment to education, athletics, and the overall development of LLCC students.
