For over three decades, the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer has spearheaded a nationwide crusade to combat breast cancer. This year, on Saturday, October 14th, the movement will converge at the Hope Institute Pavilion at Southwind Park in Springfield for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Central Illinois.
Since its inception in 1984 by Margery Gould Rath, herself a breast cancer survivor, this initiative has rallied communities across the country. It has raised approximately $1 billion since 1993, channeled into breast cancer research, patient programs, and direct services. Kate Wilson, Senior Development Manager for the American Cancer Society, noted its monumental growth, underscoring its impact on breast cancer prevention and treatment.
Making Strides is more than just a walk; it's a vibrant gathering. United Chevrolet presents this event, commencing at 9 AM with activities and a 10 AM ceremony. Survivors can register online at www.makingstrideswalk.org/centralil to receive their survivor shirt.
In 2022, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Central Illinois raised over $90,000 for the American Cancer Society, with a 2023 goal exceeding $100,000.
