The Sangamon County Mental Health Board has begun the search for its first Executive Director and is seeking proposals from attorneys and law firms interested in serving as legal counsel as the newly established organization prepares to begin operations.

Information for both opportunities is available on the Sangamon County website, where interested applicants can review qualifications, responsibilities and submission requirements.

The Mental Health Board was created following voter approval of a countywide referendum in March 2026. Once operational, the board will oversee the distribution of more than $14 million annually to support mental health, substance use and developmental disability services throughout Sangamon County.

The Executive Director will serve as the organization's first full-time leader, working with board members, community partners and other stakeholders to establish funding priorities and develop the organization as it begins carrying out its responsibilities.

According to the job posting, the board is seeking a collaborative and transparent leader with experience in mental health, public administration or a related field. Applicants should also have a record of managing complex organizations supported by public funding.

In addition to the executive search, the board has issued a Request for Proposals for legal counsel. The selected attorney or law firm will advise the board on governance, grant administration, contracts and compliance with the Community Mental Health Act, the Open Meetings Act, the Freedom of Information Act, conflict of interest policies and other legal matters related to the operation of the organization.

Attorneys submitting proposals must be licensed and in good standing in Illinois and demonstrate experience representing local governmental bodies and organizations that administer grant funding.

"This is a wonderful opportunity to help build a stronger mental health system for Sangamon County," Board Chair Steve Nardulli said. "We want to attract the strongest, most qualified applicants possible. The Executive Director will play a foundational role in shaping the future of mental health services in our community and we are committed to securing outstanding legal counsel to help guide the Board's work."

Applications for the Executive Director position are due by 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 7. Complete position information, proposal requirements and application instructions are available on the Sangamon County website.
