Mid-Month Health Tip: Eat Local, Eat Fresh

Summer in Sangamon County means fresh produce is in full swing, and there’s no better time to support local growers while eating healthier. From juicy tomatoes to crisp greens and sweet strawberries, locally grown food is not only delicious but often more nutritious thanks to its freshness and minimal transport time.

The Old Capitol Farmers Market in downtown Springfield is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays through October. You'll find more than just fruits and vegetables—vendors also offer farm-fresh eggs, grass-fed meats, and baked goods. Smaller markets in places like Chatham and Sherman offer similar selections with a friendly, small-town feel.

Shopping local helps sustain family farms and keeps money in the community, and it can also encourage healthier eating habits. Buying directly from growers means you can ask questions about how your food was raised—and even get tips on how to cook it.

Need inspiration? The University of Illinois Extension offers free resources on seasonal recipes and food preservation through its Nutrition & Wellness program. Take advantage of what Sangamon County has to offer this month—and let your plate reflect the season.
