Mid-Month Health Tip: Garden Your Way to Better Health

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and one simple way to support both mental and physical well-being may be right outside your door. Gardening can offer a calming break from daily stress while encouraging movement, time outdoors and a stronger connection to nature.

In Springfield and across Sangamon County, residents have several ways to get involved. Places such as Lincoln Memorial Garden, local community gardens in neighborhoods like Enos Park, and groups such as Compost Collective give people opportunities to learn, plant, volunteer or simply spend more time around green spaces. The University of Illinois Extension Sangamon County also offers educational resources and beginner-friendly programs for those who want to learn more about gardening, composting and growing food.

Gardening does not have to mean maintaining a large backyard plot. A few herbs in a kitchen window, flowers on a porch or vegetables in containers can still provide many of the same benefits. Planting, watering, pruning and harvesting all encourage light physical activity, while time in the sun can help with Vitamin D exposure.

There is also a sense of accomplishment that comes from helping something grow. For many people, gardening offers a routine, a reason to step outside and a peaceful activity that can be done alone or with family, neighbors or friends.

This May, consider planting something small as a step toward better health. Whether it is a backyard garden, a community plot or a single pot on a windowsill, gardening can help Springfield and Sangamon County residents grow something good for both body and mind.
