Mid-Month Health Tip: Healthy Habits for Families

As August winds down, families across Sangamon County are preparing for the start of a new school year. The shift from summer break to classroom routines can be a challenge—but it's also a great time to reestablish healthy habits at home.

The Sangamon County Regional Office of Education encourages families to focus on three core areas: sleep, nutrition, and screen time. Aim for consistent bedtimes, balanced meals with fruits and vegetables, and a tech “wind-down” period in the evening to help kids ease back into early mornings and focused learning.

Schools in districts like Springfield District 186, Ball-Chatham, and Rochester CUSD also offer wellness initiatives, such as healthier lunch options and physical activity programs. Parents can support these efforts at home by involving kids in meal prep or taking evening walks together to de-stress and stay active.

Need a little help planning healthy meals or routines? The SIU School of Medicine’s Office of Community Care offers free resources and family wellness support year-round. A little structure now can make a big difference in how kids feel and learn in the months ahead.
