July heat in Central Illinois can creep up quickly, and with rising temperatures comes the risk of heat-related illness. Staying hydrated and taking breaks from the sun are small habits that can make a big difference—especially for children, older adults, and those working or exercising outdoors.

According to the Sangamon County Department of Public Health, heat exhaustion can set in fast during summer events and outdoor activities. It recommends drinking water regularly—even if you’re not thirsty—and avoiding alcohol or caffeine, which can speed up dehydration.

When it’s time to cool off, Springfield has several public options. The Nelson Center Pool and Veterans Memorial Poolare open for the season, and splash pads at parks like Southwind Park and Rotary Park offer kid-friendly relief. For those without air conditioning, Lincoln Library and senior centers like Douglas Avenue United Methodist Church often serve as cooling centers during extreme heat advisories.

Don’t wait until you feel dizzy or overheated. Make hydration and shade-seeking a daily routine this summer to enjoy the season safely and comfortably.
