Between shopping, social events, and year-end obligations, December can be one of the most stressful months of the year. But it doesn’t have to be. Local mental health professionals say that setting boundaries and managing expectations can make the season more joyful—and less draining.
The Sangamon County Department of Public Health and organizations like MHCCI recommend building in time for rest, sticking to a realistic budget, and prioritizing quality time over perfect gifts. Springfield's Lincoln Library also offers a peaceful space to decompress, with free activities like adult coloring, quiet reading areas, and cozy corners for reflection.
For many, the holidays can also bring loneliness. Many local churches throughout Sangamon County, including Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, West Side Christian Church, and Hope Church, offer seasonal services, concerts, and events that bring people together in community and celebration.
Volunteering can also lift spirits and reduce stress. Places like St. John's Breadline, Central Illinois Foodbank, and Friend-In-Deed welcome volunteers during the holiday season to help serve meals, pack food boxes, or support community drives.
It’s okay to say no, slow down, and ask for help. Taking care of your mental and emotional health is one of the best gifts you can give yourself—and your loved ones—this December.
