Candy lovers across the United States celebrate National Jelly Bean Day each year on April 22nd, honoring the colorful, chewy treats that have been a part of American culture for over a century.
Jelly beans first appeared in the late 19th century, with their unique sugar shell and chewy interior becoming an instant favorite. Today, they are cherished for their wide variety of flavors, ranging from fruity classics to more adventurous options like buttered popcorn and toasted marshmallow.
The candies gained iconic status during the presidency of Ronald Reagan, who famously kept a jar of jelly beans on his desk in the White House. This association helped solidify their place as a symbol of American sweetness.
Jelly Belly, one of the most recognizable jelly bean brands, has deep roots in Illinois. However, the company recently closed its manufacturing plant in North Chicago in October 2024, ending over a century of operations at the historic site. While production has moved to other facilities, the closure marked the end of an era for Illinois’ connection to the beloved treat.
Whether enjoyed by the handful or savored one at a time, jelly beans remain a timeless candy, with April 22nd offering a chance to appreciate their place in confectionery history.
