On December 10, 2022, at approximately 1:19 a.m., officers responded to the 200 block of South 5th Street for a report of two subjects with firearms in the back parking lot of The Gin Mill and Wet Bar.
As officers arrived on scene they heard gunshots and observed a vehicle leaving the scene at a high rate of speed. One victim was located on the ground, on the sidewalk in front of Wet Bar with a gunshot wound to the head.
The victim, a 22 year old male, was transported by ambulance to Springfield Memorial Hospital and was taken into surgery. He is listed in stable condition at this time.
The Criminal Investigations Division arrested Carlos R. Leyva (male, 33 years old) of Decatur for the shooting. He is currently being held at the Sangamon County Jail on $750,000 bond. Formal charges are forthcoming from the Sangamon County States Attorneys Office.
