Welcome to Reel Time Rewind, where each month we revisit an iconic film from all genres—whether it's a timeless classic, an unforgettable action blockbuster, or a heart-wrenching drama. We celebrate the films that have made a lasting impact, revisiting the stories, performances, and moments that continue to resonate with audiences long after their release. This isn’t about ranking classics—it's about celebrating movies that had a lasting impact on their era and continue to resonate today.

For May, we turn back the clock to 2001 and revisit Shrek—an animated comedy that became an instant classic and changed the landscape of family films. Directed by Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson, Shrek follows the adventures of an unlikely hero, a grumpy ogre named Shrek (Mike Myers), who embarks on a quest to rescue Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) from a dragon-guarded tower. Along the way, he forms an unexpected friendship with Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and challenges traditional fairy tale tropes.

What made Shrek stand out was its unique blend of humor that worked for both kids and adults, delivering sharp wit, memorable characters, and a soundtrack that became iconic. It didn’t just poke fun at fairy tale conventions—it completely flipped them on their head. The movie’s success spawned multiple sequels, merchandise, and even a Broadway musical, cementing Shrek as one of the most beloved animated franchises.

Even now, more than two decades later, Shrek is still widely quoted and referenced in pop culture. Its message about acceptance, friendship, and not judging a book by its cover continues to resonate with audiences of all ages. Whether you saw it in theaters in 2001 or you're introducing it to a new generation, Shrek remains a timeless story with plenty of heart and laughs.

You can stream Shrek on Netflix or rent it on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, or YouTube.
