Representative Sandy Hamilton Announces run for Illinois’ 48th State Senate District
Successful athlete, coach and realtor seeks to continue representing central Illinois families
(SPRINGFIELD, Ill.) – Today, Illinois State Representative Sandy Hamilton announced her campaign for Illinois’ 48th State Senate District. The newly-drawn district covers portions of Sangamon, Macon and Christian counties, including the cities of Springfield and Decatur.
“Our state government has left behind the everyday taxpayer, and the residents of central Illinois deserve a Senator that is a relentless advocate for their values at the Capitol,” Hamilton said. “With crime rising and taxes continuing to push people out of our state, we need a leader that will support law enforcement and work to implement real solutions for central Illinois families without raising taxes.
In making her announcement, Hamilton noted her experience as a real estate broker provided her with first-hand knowledge of how impactful Illinois’ tax burden has become for families looking to purchase a home and raise their family in Illinois.
“Right now, middle-class families are facing price increases everywhere they turn, and our state’s perennial property tax issue has become even more inflamed as families struggle to balance tax payments with daily expenses like gas and groceries,” said Hamilton. Our state needs permanent and tangible tax reform that provides relief to taxpayers and will alter Illinois’ long-term outlook.
“It’s exhausting for our hard-working residents to see that Illinois is one of only three states in the entire country to lose population over the last decade. For too long, our state government has been known for corruption and insider-dealing, not ethical and efficient leadership. Every day that I am in office, I’ll fight to reverse this downward trend by supporting policies that lower taxes for struggling families and businesses, and give them confidence in their government.”
A lifelong resident of Illinois, Sandy was raised in the Chicago suburbs before enrolling at the University of Illinois on a full-ride athletic scholarship. During her collegiate career, Sandy helped lead the Fighting Illini Women’s Volleyball team to three Big Ten Championships and two trips to the NCAA Final Four. Following her graduation, Sandy began her dual-career in central Illinois as a Real Estate Broker with ReMax Professionals, and as a high school volleyball coach.
“My career at Illinois and subsequent experience coaching has given me the opportunity to help shape young athletes into leaders on and off the court,” Hamilton continued. “I’m passionate about ensuring our kids continue to have ample opportunities to learn and compete with their peers so they are prepared for success later in life.”
In 2021, Sandy was appointed to represent Illinois’ 99th House District in the state legislature. Since her appointment, she has sponsored legislation to help deter the growing number of assaults against Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) employees by charging anyone who attacks a DCFS worker with aggravated battery. Additionally, she supports legislation that would provide substantive and permanent tax relief for struggling families across Illinois, as well as increases to the state’s property tax income tax credit.
Rep. Hamilton currently serves on the House Financial Institutions, Insurance, and State Government Administration committees, as well as subcommittees on Appropriations and Transportation.
Sandy and her husband Bob reside in Springfield where they have raised their three boys, Charlie, Jake, and Will.
