Rural Springfield Man Arrested on Child Sexual Abuse Material Charges
A rural Springfield man was arrested Friday, October 23, following an investigation by the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office into the possible sexual assault of a minor.
Gregory A. McDonald, 36, of the 1200 block of North Oaklane Road, was taken into custody on an arrest warrant charging him with six counts of possession of child sexual abuse material, according to an October 26 release from the Sheriff's Office.
The investigation began in September 2026 when detectives with the Sheriff's Office Investigations Division began looking into allegations involving the potential sexual assault of a minor child. During the investigation, detectives identified a suspect and obtained a search warrant for his residence.
On October 16, investigators executed the search warrant and recovered numerous electronic devices, including McDonald's personal cellphone, as part of their investigation.
Following the search, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for McDonald. Investigators returned to his residence on October 23 and arrested him at approximately 3 p.m.
McDonald was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Sangamon County Jail.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue conducting forensic examinations of the electronic devices recovered during the search. Additional criminal charges could be filed depending on the findings of those examinations.
The Sangamon County Sheriff's Office also acknowledged the assistance of the Illinois Attorney General's Office and the Sangamon County State's Attorney's Office in the investigation.
