Sangamon County celebrated the opening of its new first-floor courtroom today at the Sangamon County Courthouse. The opening ceremony featured remarks from Illinois Supreme Court Justice Lisa Holder White, Chief Circuit Judge Ryan Cadagin, Sangamon County Board Chairman Andy Van Meter, and Circuit Clerk Joe Roesch.
The new courtroom is part of the ongoing renovation of the Sangamon County Complex. The project is aimed at improving access to services and preparing the building for the future addition of the HUB. The updated space will be used primarily for traffic court and includes a payment center for the Circuit Clerk’s Office just outside the courtroom. This setup allows individuals to pay fines and fees immediately after their hearings.
Chief Circuit Judge Ryan Cadagin said, “I want to thank Justice Holder White for joining us today and for her ongoing support of the courts across Illinois. I also appreciate Chairman Andy Van Meter and the Sangamon County Board for recognizing the need to include this courtroom in the renovation plans. Their support made it possible to create a space that improves access and better serves the public.”
Sangamon County Board Chairman Andy Van Meter stated, “This renovation focused on the people who use the building. The new layout is easier to navigate, and the courtroom is designed to help residents take care of business more quickly and with less hassle.”
Circuit Clerk Joe Roesch added, “Having the payment center right outside the courtroom will make it easier for those attending traffic court to manage fines and fees, helping reduce delays and improve overall court operations.”
The courtroom is now open for use. The updated layout and added features are intended to make it easier for visitors to find where they need to go and take care of court-related matters more efficiently. Other parts of the courthouse renovation project are also nearing completion, including the relocation of the Treasurer’s Office, Supervisor of Assessments, and Recorder’s Office to the first floor. The newly renovated County Clerk’s Office, also on the first floor, is already complete and serving the public.
