A new two-mile northward extension of the Sangamon Valley Trail into Menard County was officially dedicated Monday, marking a milestone in the region’s efforts to expand recreational access across central Illinois. The Sangamon Valley Trail now runs nearly 13.5 miles and connects multiple communities, fostering greater opportunities for walking, cycling, and outdoor enjoyment.

This expansion was brought to life through a coordinated partnership among Menard County, Sangamon County, and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, with design and construction support from local engineers and contractors. Funding was secured via the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) and additional state and local contributions. Louis Yockey of the IDNR’s Office of Realty and Capital Planning highlighted the agency’s role, noting that state funding for planning and engineering helped leverage federal transportation enhancement funds to build the trail extension.

At the dedication, Sangamon County Board Chair Andy Van Meter underscored the value of intergovernmental cooperation, saying, “The Sangamon Valley Trail has become one of our region’s signature recreational assets, stretching across communities. Each improvement, including this new extension into Menard County, represents years of planning and collaboration. We are especially grateful to Menard County and the many partners who worked together to make this expansion possible. Projects like this show what can be accomplished when counties and community partners share a common vision.”

Local voices emphasized the broader benefits of the trail. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce President Brie Allison remarked that such investments not only promote healthy lifestyles and outdoor recreation but also support the local economy by attracting visitors and connecting people to area destinations. Springfield Bicycle Club representative Chris Scheufele added that the trail—now offering a round-trip span of approximately 27 miles—enhances community access to the natural beauty of the region.

Menard County Engineer Corey Dowd expressed his gratitude, praising the collaborative effort and noting that the extension provides “a safe, scenic route for cyclists, pedestrians, and outdoor enthusiasts connecting northern Sangamon County and southern Menard County.”

With this segment now open, trail supporters look ahead to further expansions, hopeful that continued vision and cooperation will expand the reach and impact of the Sangamon Valley Trail for years to come.
