With the new school year starting, Sangamon County Sheriff Paula Crouch is reminding motorists to remain alert and obey school bus safety laws to help protect children traveling to and from school.

“As buses return to our roadways and children wait at bus stops, drivers need to slow down, pay attention, and obey all traffic laws around school zones and buses,” said Sheriff Paula Crouch. “A moment of distraction or impatience can have tragic consequences. We all share the responsibility to keep our students safe.”

Under Illinois law, drivers must stop when a school bus is stopped with its stop arm extended and red lights flashing. This rule applies to traffic in both directions on most roads unless lanes are divided by a physical barrier. Motorists should also watch for children crossing the street to board or exit a bus.

The Sheriff’s Office offered the following safety reminders:

  • Stop for school buses when the stop arm is extended and lights are flashing.

  • Never pass a bus that is loading or unloading children.

  • Slow down in school zones and obey posted speed limits.

  • Stay alert for children who may cross unexpectedly, especially near bus stops.

Violations of school bus safety laws in Illinois can lead to significant fines, driver’s license suspension, and higher insurance premiums.

More information on school bus safety is available through the Illinois Secretary of State’s website or by contacting the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office.
