SIU Medical Students Donate Shoes to Local Kids

SIU School of Medicine students in the Pediatric Interest Group provided athletic shoes to area elementary students on November 30 and December 1.

More than 100 children at McClernand and Enos elementary schools were given new shoes and socks during the pair of “Shoes That Fit” events.

SIU Medicine community members and medical students donate funds and shop for the shoes as part of the national Shoes That Fit program. District 186 staff at the respective schools identify students needing new shoes, measure their feet and send sizes to the medical group. Its students organize projects geared to improve children's health and visit the schools annually. Since 2007, the medical school has provided more than 1,200 pairs of shoes to area students.
