SPD Officer Receives Life Saving Award

Last week, Mayor Misty Buscher, alongside Police Chief Ken Scarlette, proudly recognized Officer Keagan Graves of the Springfield Police Department with the esteemed Life Saving Award.

On June 20th, at approximately 12:46 AM, Officer Graves was in the area of 3075 Normandy Rd., where a large gathering was taking place. He observed a portion of the crowd scattering and vehicles leaving at a high rate of speed. Around the same time, Sgt. Chockley discovered a stabbing victim.

Without hesitation, Officer Graves immediately began treating the victim, using combat gauze to pack the wound. Throughout the process, he remained calm and reassured the victim, explaining that although the treatment was painful, it would give him the best chance at survival.

Paramedics arrived shortly after and transported the victim to St. John's Hospital, where he received extensive treatment. The victim survived his injuries, thanks in large part to Officer Graves' swift and decisive actions.

The Emergency Department physician at St. John's Hospital stated that Officer Graves' actions "absolutely" saved the patient's life.

"Officer Graves' willingness to go above and beyond, his calmness under pressure, and his ability to apply his training when it mattered most are the reasons he undoubtedly deserved this award, said Police Chief Ken Scarlette.
