The Springfield Police Department has formally recognized Officers Jolene Balog, Logan Coventry, and Jack Clement with the Life Saving Award for their heroic actions that saved a young man in crisis.
The incident occurred on Saturday, April 12, 2025, when officers were dispatched to 239 N. 6th Street after a 911 call from a 22-year-old male who was emotionally distressed and stated he intended to jump from a nearby bridge.
Officer Balog was the first to arrive and located the individual walking eastbound on the south side of the bridge. As she exited her squad car, the man climbed over the railing and held on with one arm. Remaining calm and compassionate, Officer Balog began speaking with him and was able to reach out and secure his arm to prevent him from falling.
Officer Coventry arrived moments later and immediately grabbed the individual's other arm. As the man’s feet left the edge and he dangled from the bridge, the two officers worked together to hold him.
Officer Clement soon arrived on the scene and wrapped his arms around the subject’s chest. Together, the three officers were able to safely lift the individual back over the railing.
After securing the scene, Officer Balog continued speaking with the man and later transported him to a hospital for a mental health evaluation and care.
"These officers exemplified courage, professionalism, and humanity in a moment of extreme crisis,” said Springfield Police Commander Ryan Leach. "Their ability to remain calm under pressure and act selflessly reflects the highest standards of law enforcement.”
The Life Saving Award is one of the department’s highest honors. The Springfield Police Department commends Officers Balog, Coventry, and Clement for their bravery, teamwork, and commitment to protecting the community.
