Founded in February 1900, the Springfield Park District is celebrating its 125th Anniversary this year. According to Illinois Park and Recreation Magazine, hosted by the Northern Illinois University Periodicals On-line Project, following the Civil War, individuals in Illinois began to recognize the importance of public green spaces.  In June 1893, the General Assembly approved an “act to provide for the creation of Pleasure Driveway and Park Districts.” Peoria was the first district in Illinois to seek organization under this new law, and Springfield was the second. Today, Illinois has a reputation for one of the best public park and forest preserve systems in the United States. The Springfield Park District has grown to include over 36 parks and facilities, including golf courses, swimming pools, an ice rink, and a zoo.

In addition to the physical spaces, the Park District offers a number of activities, including camps, preschool, and Special Recreation. Special Recreation provides recreational and leisure activities specifically designed for individuals with disabilities. The 2024-2025 Special Rec basketball team had a very successful season, winning the state championship.

The Springfield Park District is governed by an elected board of seven un-paid Trustees who serve for four-year terms.  Board Meetings are held twice a month in the evenings. As Springfield Park Board Trustee Mary Beth Rodgers notes, “The Springfield Park District provides so many varied and enriching opportunities for the community and visitors. You can go to a hockey game or join a disc golf league, or socialize with other parents and kids at Funshop. I love being a part of something so special.”

The Park District has several unique events planned in connection with the 125th Anniversary Celebration.  From May 1 to July 31, 2025, the Springfield Park District is hosting Park Quest, which includes featured activities at a number of parks and a park-themed photo contest with the chance to win one of five individual season passes to the Henson Robinson Zoo.

On Saturday, June 14, 2025, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., “Taste of the Past” will be held at the Washington Park Pavilion. This free, family-friendly event combines a historic photo display inside the Pavilion with delicious ice cream served by Park N Chill outside the gallery.  It is a great opportunity to learn fun facts about the Pavilion’s history and celebrate the Park District’s milestone.
