Springfield will again take the national stage in competitive horseshoe pitching as the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association (NHPA) has selected the city to host the 2028 World Horseshoe Pitching Championships. The event will run July 17–29, 2028, inside the new air-dome facility at SCHEELS Sports Park at Legacy Pointe.
More than 1,000 competitors from across the United States, Canada, Germany, Norway, and other countries are expected to take part in nearly two weeks of tournament play. NHPA officials cited Springfield’s central location, strong transportation network, and updated sports facilities as key reasons for the city’s selection. Springfield previously hosted the championships in 2009.
Local leaders estimate the event will generate roughly $2.8 million in economic activity for the region, including lodging, dining, and tourism spending. Support from the Illinois Office of Tourism’s Incentive Grant Program strengthened Springfield’s bid and helped secure the return of the tournament.
Organizers say the timing offers a unique opportunity for local businesses to participate in community-wide celebrations, as 2028 marks the 100-year anniversary of Springfield’s iconic Horseshoe sandwich. Restaurants and shops are expected to take part in themed promotions for visiting competitors and spectators.
The 2028 championships will be one of the first major events held inside the SCHEELS Sports Park air dome, giving Springfield an early opportunity to showcase the new facility. City and tourism officials say they are preparing to work closely with the NHPA to ensure a smooth event and a strong showing for the region.
