According to witness information and a driver’s statement, the driver of a black GMC Acadia was traveling west on Mansion Road when it approached Curran Road. The motorcycle, a red 2003 Harley Davidson, was traveling south on Curran Road. The GMC proceeded into the intersection, striking the motorcycle.

The driver of the motorcycle, a 64-year-old male from Springfield, was transported to an area hospital, where Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon confirmed the motorcyclist succumbed to his injuries. The other motorist refused medical care on scene.

On Friday, Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon identified the 64-year-old man as Manfred Schmidt of Springfield.

This accident remains under investigation. Illinois State Police are handling the accident reconstruction. Pending the outcome of the investigation, the at-fault driver will be cited.
