A Springfield man has been sentenced to 37 years in prison following his conviction for the 2018 murder of Dohndre Hughes. Dayne Woods, 26, was found guilty by a Sangamon County jury in June 2024 on charges of first-degree murder, armed robbery, home invasion, and theft.
The charges stem from an incident on February 23, 2018, when Woods and his co-defendant, Mark D. Meszaros, forced their way into Hughes' home in the 1900 block of E. Jackson Street. During a struggle, Woods stabbed Hughes in the chest, causing his death.
After the conviction, State’s Attorney John Milhiser said, “The jury’s verdict in this case should serve as a reminder that if you engage in dangerous, violent behavior in our community, you will be held accountable for the deadly consequences of your actions.”
Woods, who has already served 2,369 days in custody while awaiting trial, will receive credit for time served. Following his prison term, he will be on mandatory supervised release for three years.
Meanwhile, co-defendant Meszaros remains in custody and Katherine Smith of Chatham, who is also facing murder charges in connection with the case, is currently out on bond.
