The Springfield Muni’s summer season continues with the beloved Rodgers and Hammerstein classic Oklahoma!, returning for its second and final week of performances, July 16–19 at 8:30 p.m.

Directed by Gil and Ann Opferman, Oklahoma! is making its fifth appearance on the Muni stage, most recently performed in 2007. Set in the farmland of Claremore—soon to become the state of Oklahoma—in 1906, the musical follows farm girl Laurey Williams as she navigates a complicated courtship between two very different suitors: the confident cowboy Curly McLain and the brooding farmhand Jud Fry. The show also features a lighthearted subplot involving the flirtatious Ado Annie and her would-be fiancé Will Parker.

Featuring beloved songs such as “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’,” “Surrey with the Fringe on Top,” and the rousing title number “Oklahoma!”, the musical was the first collaboration between composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II. It debuted on Broadway in 1943 and is based on Green Grow the Lilacs, a 1931 play by Lynn Riggs.

Oklahoma! has received numerous accolades over the decades, including a Pulitzer Prize in 1944, a 1993 Special Tony Award for its 50th anniversary, and multiple honors for its acclaimed revivals—most recently the 2019 Tony Award and 2023 Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival.
