Springfield Municipal Opera’s production of Shrek the Musical has already opened to enthusiastic audiences with its first weekend performances behind it. Staged as part of The Muni’s celebratory 75th season, the production draws from the beloved 2001 DreamWorks film and the Tony‑nominated Broadway version by Jeanine Tesori and David Lindsay‑Abaire.
Directed by LaDonna Wilson, with choreography by Sean Robb and music direction by Nicole Pitman, this community theatre staging delivers a polished, family‑friendly performance rated G, yet it retains the Broadway score’s sly nods to adult humor that keep even seasoned patrons laughing. The colorful costumes and whimsical set design evoke the Broadway original’s signature Technicolor aesthetic, while plenty of guest appearances by fairytale characters imbue the production with fun and warmth.
Coming after Springfield’s earlier productions this summer—Something Rotten! and The Hunchback of Notre Dame—Shrek offers a distinctly irreverent and theatrical twist, showcasing the Muni’s commitment to variety in its four‑show 2025 season. Tickets remain available through MetroTix and the box office; reserved seats are priced at $22, with lawn admission available at $15 for adults and $12 for students, seniors, military members, or children (ages six to twelve), while children under age six enter free.
With summer in full swing, this week’s performances offer a perfect opportunity for families and community members to gather under the stars for an evening of enchanting storytelling, laughter, and live musical theatre.
