Springfield Police Arrest Suspect in Deadly Shooting

On the evening of April 1, 2025, Springfield Police responded to a traffic accident with reported injuries in the 2000 block of North Dirksen Parkway. Upon arrival at approximately 9:13 p.m., officers heard multiple gunshots near the McDonald's restaurant at 2100 North Dirksen Parkway. Witnesses informed officers that a man had been shot near the drive-thru area.
Officers located the victim, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The suspect was quickly taken into custody at the scene. According to police, a woman injured in the accident had contacted the victim, who then arrived to check on her well-being. An interaction between the victim and the driver of the other vehicle in the accident led to the shooting. The victim was transported to HSHS St. John’s Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon confirmed the death of 51-year-old Jerald P. Fahey of Springfield, who was transported by EMS to HSHS St. John’s Hospital’s emergency room from the 2100 block of North Dirksen Parkway. Fahey was pronounced deceased by hospital staff at 9:40 p.m. An autopsy was conducted on April 2, 2025, and preliminary findings indicate that he died from multiple gunshot wounds. The death remains under investigation by the Sangamon County Coroner’s Office and the Springfield Police Department.
Springfield Police Crime Scene Services and detectives arrived to process evidence and conduct an investigation.

Authorities identified Nicholas J. Kammueller, 46, of Rochester, Illinois, as the driver involved in the accident and the suspect in the shooting. He was arrested and later released from the Sangamon County Jail on pretrial release and is due back in court in May.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have stated that additional details will be released as they become available.
