Springfield Police are investigating two separate shootings that occurred last weekend, leaving two teenagers injured.
The first incident took place on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at approximately 11:09 p.m. Officers were dispatched to the 2500 block of Milford Drive following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they found a 15-year-old male with a gunshot wound to his face. The victim was transported to HSHS St. John’s Hospital, where he underwent surgery. Fortunately, the injury was later determined to be non-life-threatening. According to investigators, the shooting stemmed from a dispute between two groups of juveniles that had begun in the 2700 block of W. Lawrence Avenue before escalating on Milford Drive. Detectives and crime scene personnel are continuing to investigate.
The second shooting occurred just hours later, on Sunday, September 22, 2024, at approximately 2:36 a.m., when officers responded to reports of gunfire in the 300 block of S. State Street. According to witnesses, an unknown suspect fired several rounds into the back of a residence. A 15-year-old male who was in the kitchen at the time was struck in the lower body. The victim was transported to Springfield Memorial Hospital, where he underwent surgery for what was also determined to be a non-life-threatening injury. Crime scene investigators were on hand to gather evidence, and detectives are actively investigating the case.
At this time, police have not determined if the two incidents are related. Both investigations are ongoing, and additional details will be released as they become available.
