Springfield Selected to Host Hazardous Waste Collection Event

The Illinois EPA announced ten upcoming Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) one-day collection events for Fall 2024, including an event in Springfield. These collections, co-sponsored by local government units, offer residents a free opportunity to safely dispose of hazardous household products.

The Springfield HHW collection event is scheduled for October 19, 2024, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The exact location will be announced soon. Pre-registration is required for participation. The event is open to all Illinois residents, providing a convenient and safe way to dispose of items like chemical cleaners, oil-based paints, thinners, antifreeze, motor oil, gasoline, kerosene, weed killers, insecticides, pesticides, and fluorescent lamps.

"Illinois EPA is pleased to once again offer one-day Household Hazardous Waste collection events, providing residents with the opportunity to properly dispose of unused and unwanted household chemicals and other hazardous products from their homes,” said Interim Director Jennings. "I would also like to extend a special thanks to our local partners for helping to make these events possible.”

Items not accepted at the event include latex paint, explosives, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, agricultural chemicals, and business wastes. A complete list of acceptable and unacceptable items is available on the Illinois EPA website.

Residents are advised to pack their HHW items in disposable boxes to prevent spills during transport, keep similar chemicals together, ensure containers are sealed and not leaking, and place the boxes in their vehicle's trunk or storage compartment, away from passengers. At the collection site, residents should remain in their vehicles while on-site personnel remove the HHW.

For more information and to pre-register, residents can contact the City of Springfield Department of Public Works at public.works@springfield.il.us or call 217-789-2255. Further details and the full schedule of HHW collection events can be found on the Illinois EPA website.
