Springfield Shooting Suspect Arrested

The Sheriff's Office has announced the apprehension of a suspect in relation to the shooting incident that claimed the life of Aaron Cutler on May 31, 2023. Yesterday, the Sangamon County State's Attorney's Office issued an arrest warrant for Jerry E. Stegall, a 37-year-old resident of Springfield.


Stegall has been charged with three counts of First Degree Murder and one count of Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, with bond set at $2,000,000.



Last night, at approximately 5:00 p.m., members of the United States Marshals Great Lakes Fugitive Task Force arrested Stegall at a residence located in Alton, Illinois. Following the arrest, Stegall was promptly transported back to Springfield and is currently detained at the Sangamon County Jail.


The Sheriff's Office extended appreciation to the Sangamon County State's Attorney's Office, Sangamon County Coroner's Office, the U.S. Marshals Service, and the Alton Police Department for their invaluable assistance and collaborative efforts in bringing this case to a swift resolution.
