Springfield Teen Shot, Killed Near Southeast High School

A 16-year-old teen has died following a shooting near Southeast High School on Wednesday morning.

Springfield Police say they were called to the 2300 block of Taylor Ave at 8:42 a.m, where they found the teen with at least one gunshot wound to the lower torso. He was rushed into surgery at the hospital but did not survive.

Southeast High School and Ball Charter were both placed on a soft lockdown status when the incident was reported. The lockdowns were lifted later the same morning.

Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon later confirmed the identity of the 16-year-old male as Keyon Day of Springfield. He was pronounced deceased at HSHS St. John’s Hospital at 9:48 a.m. Wednesday after being transported by EMS from the scene. An autopsy was done today and preliminary findings show he died from multiple gunshot wounds.

The Springfield Police Department is currently questioning multiple individuals considered to be persons of interest in the shooting. Based on the information the police have, they say it does not appear to be a random shooting.

District 186 confirmed that the deceased was a student from Southeast High School. District 186 officials say they will provide support for students and faculty and extra patrols and security at Southeast High School and in the vicinity of Ball Charter and Southeast.

The death remains under investigation by the Springfield Police Department and the Sangamon County Coroner.
