Springfield Teens Charged with Murder

State's Attorney John Milhiser announced charges filed in connection with the August 4, 2024, shooting death of seventeen-year-old Dayquan Wiley. Seventeen-year-old Larryoun Taylor is charged as an adult and appeared in Sangamon County Court on October 18, 2024, for arraignment after being indicted by a Sangamon County grand jury. Taylor is charged with First Degree Murder and Home Invasion. He remains in custody. His next court appearance is November 12, 2024.

A fifteen-year-old juvenile is also charged in connection with the murder of Dayquan Wiley. This juvenile was apprehended last week in Wisconsin by the United States Marshals Fugitive Task Force and will be extradited back to Sangamon County. Because this second suspect is only fifteen years old, he has been initially charged with First Degree Murder and Home Invasion in juvenile court. A Petition will be filed to transfer him to adult court. Under Illinois law, until juveniles reach the age of sixteen, transfer to adult court is not automatic, but rather permissive and a Petition to Transfer must initially be filed in juvenile court and then after a hearing, the court will determine if a transfer is appropriate and then the case can be transferred to adult court. If the court finds that the transfer is not appropriate, then the case will remain in juvenile court.

On August 4, 2024, Springfield Police responded to a house in the 1800 block of 11th Street in regards to a shots fired call. Once on scene, the police located Dayquan Wiley in a bedroom at the residence, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transferred to St. John's Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Sangamon County State's Attorney John Milhiser said, "Our prayers are with the family of Dayquan, and the message must be clear - if you commit violent acts in our community we will find you and bring you to justice."
