The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency has announced that Springfield will host a one-day Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection event on Friday, September 27, as part of the agency’s statewide fall cleanup initiative. The event will take place at Chamberlain Park from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., offering Sangamon County residents a free and responsible way to dispose of hazardous materials commonly found in the home.

The event is open to all Illinois residents, but advanced registration is required. Those planning to attend must sign up online to secure a time slot. This system is designed to manage traffic flow and ensure safety for both residents and event staff.

Accepted items include oil-based paints, household cleaners, lawn chemicals, antifreeze, gasoline, and other potentially harmful substances. However, the EPA notes that certain items will not be accepted, such as latex paint, explosives, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, and business-generated waste. A complete list of accepted and prohibited materials is available on the Illinois EPA’s website.

To help ensure safe and efficient disposal, participants are encouraged to package materials in disposable boxes, group similar items, secure lids tightly, and transport them in the trunk or back of the vehicle. Upon arrival, residents should remain in their vehicles while trained personnel remove the materials for processing.

The Springfield collection event is one of eight scheduled across the state this fall, part of the Illinois EPA’s ongoing effort to support environmentally safe disposal practices and protect both public health and natural resources. For additional information or to register for the Springfield event, residents can visit the Illinois EPA’s website or contact the Materials Management Unit at 217-524-3300.
