The Illinois State Police is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred around 10:47 p.m. in the 1600 block of Toronto Road in Springfield.
Preliminary information indicates an ISP Trooper interacted with a suspect, 37-year-old Cristobal Santana of Chicago, believed to be wanted in connection with a homicide occurring recently in Chicago.
During the interaction, gunshots were fired, and the Trooper was struck in the leg. Responding officers gave medical aid on the scene until first responders transported the officer to a local hospital.
Santana fled his vehicle on foot but was taken into custody at 1:58 a.m. No other police officers were injured.
ISP is investigating the shooting and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
UPDATE:
Illinois State Police released the name of the trooper who was shot in Springfield; Dakotah Chapman-Green. Chapman-Green was shot in the leg and transported the officer to a local hospital, where he remains in serious condition.
