With the hot summer in full swing, it's essential to prioritize safety when firing up those grills. According to the Office of the State Fire Marshal, July tops the list as the peak month for grill fires, closely followed by June, May, and August. To ensure a safe and enjoyable summer filled with your favorite grilled foods, here are ten crucial safety practices to follow:

  1. Use propane and charcoal grills exclusively outdoors.

  2. Position the grill away from your home, deck railings, eaves, and overhanging tree branches.

  3. Maintain a safe distance of at least three feet between children, pets, and the grilling area.

  4. Keep the grill clean, removing grease and fat buildup from the grates and trays below.

  5. Never leave the grill unattended.

  6. Always ensure gas grill lids are open before igniting.

  7. Check propane tanks and hoses for leaks before each use.

  8. If you detect a gas odor while grilling, promptly evacuate and contact the fire department.

  9. Allow charcoal coals to cool before discarding them in a metal container.

  10. Have a fire extinguisher, bucket of water, or garden hose nearby for immediate access.

By adhering to these safety guidelines, you can savor your outdoor cooking while keeping your loved ones and property protected. Enjoy a safe and delicious summer grilling season!
