Sleek coats, bright eyes, and loving personalities make black cats stand out, yet they are often overlooked in shelters. That’s why August 17 is recognized as Black Cat Appreciation Day, a chance to celebrate these beautiful pets and challenge the superstitions that have followed them for centuries.

Located at 2100 Shale Street in Springfield, the Sangamon County Animal Control & Adoption Center provides a compassionate environment for stray and surrendered animals, including black cats. The center is dedicated to reuniting lost pets with their families and finding forever homes for every adoptable animal.

As summer draws to a close, the center is inviting the community to make the season memorable by welcoming a new four-legged companion into their home. Through August 31, the shelter is offering reduced adoption fees of $25 for all dogs and cats. Each adopted pet will be spayed or neutered, microchipped, and given age-appropriate vaccinations.

Shelter officials encourage residents to take advantage of this opportunity to provide a loving, permanent home for an animal in need. “There’s no better way to wrap up the summer than by starting a new adventure with a loyal companion,” the center’s announcement said.

How to Adopt a Black Cat (or Any Pet):

  • Visit the Center: Adoption hours are Monday–Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

  • Find Your Match: Staff will help match you with a pet that fits your lifestyle and preferences.

  • Complete the Process: All animals are vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and microchipped. After finding your companion, complete the paperwork and pay the adoption fee.

By adopting a black cat, you’ll gain a loyal and loving friend while challenging the myths that have surrounded them for centuries. For more information, call 217-535-3065 or visit the center before the end of the month.
