An armed robbery in Springfield during the early hours of November 12, 2024, led to the arrest of a 27-year-old suspect following a police pursuit and foot chase.
At approximately 2:23 a.m., Springfield Police officers were dispatched to the 700 block of North 7th Street in response to a report of an armed robbery. Upon arrival, the victim reported being robbed at gunpoint. The suspect allegedly stole the victim’s vehicle, cell phone, and wallet before fleeing the scene.
A short time later, officers spotted the stolen vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. The driver, however, fled, leading to a brief pursuit that ended when the vehicle crashed near Park Street and North Grand Avenue. The suspect then attempted to escape on foot but was quickly apprehended by officers. During the arrest, officers recovered a loaded 9mm firearm.
The suspect was identified as Daiquaon J. Johnson of Springfield. He was arrested on multiple charges, including aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm, armed robbery with a firearm, armed habitual criminal, unlawful possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm without a FOID card, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and resisting arrest. Johnson was subsequently transported to the Sangamon County Jail.
On November 13, the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office formally charged Johnson with aggravated vehicular hijacking, armed robbery, armed habitual criminal, and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. He remains in custody at the Sangamon County Jail.
